Trombettista, nasce a Viareggio (LU) il 26 Luglio del 1965 e inizia a studiare musica e tromba nella banda di Torre del Lago Puccini nel 1975, guidato dal padre Dino, dal maestro Marino Peruzzi e da alcuni musicisti jazz amatoriali vicini a Dean Benedetti, il famoso sassofonista jazz italo-americano menzionato in tutte le biografie di Charlie Parker. Già nel 1979, all’età di soli 14 anni, Andrea viene notato dal noto arrangiatore e direttore d’orchestra Luciano Maraviglia e inizia ad essere chiamato a suonare come prima tromba con molte big band professionali della Versilia. Nello stesso anno inizia a fare le prime esperienze lavorative anche nel campo della musica classica e nel 1981 entra a studiare tromba all’Istituto Musicale Pareggiato “L . Boccherini” di Lucca, dove nel 1987 si diploma con il massimo dei voti, 10 e lode (a tutt’oggi ancora unico trombettista nella storia dell’Istituto ad aver conseguito questo risultato). Nello stesso anno si perfeziona con Armando Ghitalla (tromba solista della Boston Symphony Orchestra e docente presso l’Università del Michigan) e approfondisce gli studi jazzistici con O. Valdambrini e S. Fanni (trombe soliste dell’Orchestra di Musica Leggera della Rai di Roma e di Milano).
Nell’ambito del jazz, si é esibito come ospite solista e/o come prima tromba con Maynard Ferguson e la sua Big Bop Nouveau Band (USA) in Italia, Inghilterra e Stati Uniti, Peter Erskine, Randy Brecker, Gino Vannelli, Eric Marienthal, Claudio Roditi, Kenny Wheeler, Tom Harrell, Paul Jeffrey, Dave Liebman, Brad Leali, Butch Miles, Carmen Bradford, Dusko Gojkovich, Steve Swallow, Frank Foster, New York Voices, Till Brönner, Valery Ponomarev, Carl Anderson, Lee Konitz, John Taylor, Palle Daniellson, Denis DiBlasio, Lew Soloff e con gli italiani Enrico Rava, Gianni Basso, Paolo Fresu, Massimo Nunzi, Bruno Tommaso, Stefano Bollani, Giorgio Gaslini, Gianluigi Trovesi, Paolo Fresu, Henghel Gualdi, Mauro Grossi,, ecc… Si è inoltre esibitio con gli Atlanta Seventeen Big Band (USA), con la Rowan University Big Band (USA), New England Jazz Ensemble (USA), San Diego State University Jazz Band (USA), RCC Wind Ensemble Honor Band (USA), Upland HS Jazz Band (USA), Deer Valley HS Jazz Band (USA), Luxembourg Jazz Orchestra, Opus78 Big Band e la Harmonie Bascharage (Lussemburgo), Dani Felber Big Band, SMZ Big Band, ZHdK Big Band (Svizzera) e Jazzorchester Karlsruhe (Germania).
Il 20 Settembre 2006 è stato invitato come solista al “Maynard Ferguson Tribute”, concerto ufficiale per la commemorazione di Maynard Ferguson organizzato al Touhill Performing Arts Center di St. Louis (USA), dal quale è stato realizzato il dvd ufficiale per la commemorazione del grande trombettista canadese (2007). Nel 2014 è stato chiamato a far parte del prestigioso “Board of Directors” dell’International Trumpet Guild americano, primo trombettista italiano nella storia, ed è stato ufficialmente eletto in carica dai membri dell’ITG fino al 2019. Si è esibito come solista nelle Conferenze ITG del 2008 (Banff Center, Canada), 2010 (Sidney, Australia), 2012 (Columbus, Georgia, USA) e 2015 (Columbus, Ohio, USA).
Nel 2008 ha ottenuto come riconoscimento dal Governo degli Stati Uniti d’America il permesso di lavoro Visa O-1 per straordinaria abilità nelle arti. Ha collaborato come 1° tromba e solista con l’orchestra americana di Paul Anka, col quale ha effettuato i Tours Europei 2007 e 2008 e molti altri concerti sia negli Stati Uniti che in Europa, e ha fatto parte della band di Gino Vannelli per il suo Tour Italiano 2012.
Negli ultimi 15 anni ha partecipato anche a moltissime show televisivi per RAI, MEDIASET, LA7, e SKY (attualmente circa 100, tra le quali il “Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo”, “Fiorello-Stasera pago io Revolution”, “Francamente me ne infischio”, “125 milioni di caz…e” e “RockPolitik” con Adriano Celentano, 2 anni di “Maurizio Costanzo Show” e “Buona Domenica” con Demo Morselli, “Panariello-Ma il cielo è sempre più blu”, “Disco per l’Estate”, “Pavarotti & Friends 2000 For Cambodia and Tibet”, “La Notte Vola”, “Passaparola” ecc…) e come session man ha inciso innumerevoli colonne sonore per importanti films italiani, nelle più importanti sale di incisione, oltre a innumerevoli spot pubblicitari. Nel 2013 ha anche composto e inciso la colonna sonora del film “Il Segreto degli Alberi” (2012) insieme al pianista R. Arrighini.
Nell’ambito della musica pop, ha fatto parte della band di Jovanotti nel Tour “L’Albero” 1997 ed ha avuto modo di esibirsi e/o incidere con Luciano Pavarotti, Fiorello, Adriano Celentano, Claudio Baglioni, Gianni Morandi, Renato Zero, Elio e le Storie Tese e Biba Band, Antonella Ruggiero, Toto Cutugno, YuYu, Irene Grandi, Fausto Leali, Articolo 31, Gino Paoli, Tullio De Piscopo, Francesco Baccini, Ivana Spagna, Andrea Mingardi, Rossana Casale, Dirotta su Cuba e Jenny B. Ha fatto parte per 2 anni della Big Band di Demo Morselli ed ha accompagnato in esibizioni televisive live la stragrande maggioranza dei cantanti italiani, oltre ad artisti stranieri come George Michael, Burt Bacharach, Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, Michael Bublè, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gloria Gaynor, Amy Stewart, Donna Summer, Randy Crawford, Carl Anderson, Gibson Brothers, Matt Bianco, Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Samantha Fox, Imagination, Patrick Hernandez, Tony Hadley, Paul Young e Petula Clark.
Dal jazz alla musica leggera e classica si è esibito negli Stati Uniti, Canada, Australia, Germania, Inghilterra, Lussemburgo, Malta, Finlandia, Francia, Russia, Lichtenstein, Austria, Svizzera, Olanda, Belgio, Scozia, Grecia, Spagna, Portogallo, Serbia e Principato di Monaco. Ad oggi, è apparso come trombettista nel film RAI “Le ragazze di San Frediano” (2007) ed ha suonato nei video “Maynard Ferguson Tribute Concert” di Saint Louis (USA, 2007), “Lorenzo, Raccolto 1997” (Polygram), “Pavarotti & Friends 2000, For Cambodia and Tibet” (Decca) e “Ti Adoro” di Pavarotti, 2003. Si è esibito come solista nel dvd “Jazz Istruzioni per L’Uso” della Laterza Edizioni (2008) e nella collana di 12 dvd “La Grande Storia del Jazz” (2009) allegata a Espresso-Repubblica, entrambi curati da Massimo Nunzi.
Nel 1999 ha inciso “Mattia’s Walk & Tribute To Maynard Ferguson”, il suo primo disco di jazz come solista, edito dalla Splasc(H) Records, e nel 2001 é uscito “Ricordo di…Napoli”, un omaggio alla musica napoletana edito da Fonotecnica. Durante il suo Tour 2005 negli Stati Uniti ha inciso per la LMP Records di Clermont (California) con gli Artisan Brass di Los Angeles la “Romantic Celebration” Suite per tromba solista jazz e quintetto di ottoni, dedicatagli dal compositore americano Grammy-Nominated Brent Pierce. Nel 2008, il compositore italiano Antonio Giacometti gli ha dedicato la parte di tromba solista nel poema sinfonico “Antarctica”. Nel 2010 è uscito il nuovo disco “Flamingo” prodotto dagli LMP Studios di Jim Linahon (Clermont, California) per l’etichetta ACM (American Creative Music, USA) e la “Earth Games 2012” suite (Summit Records, USA) con Joe Alessi, dedicatagli dal compositore Nicola Ferro. Il disco “More Than Just Friends” registrato come prima tromba e solista con la Dani Felber Big Band ha vinto il prestigioso“Swiss Jazz Award” nel 2009 e il disco. Tra pop, jazz, musica latina e colonne sonore, ha inciso più di 500 dischi collaborando con i più prestigiosi artisti nazionali e internazionali.

Nell’ambito della musica classica ha vinto i concorsi nazionali per l’Orchestra Giovanile Italiana di Fiesole (Tournée Europea e Italiana 1988) e per il Teatro Comunale del Giglio di Lucca, arrivando anche in finale a Roma nelle selezioni per l’ECYO (Orchestra Giovanile Europea). Nel 1989/90 ha svolto il servizio militare di leva suonando nella Banda dell’Aeronautica Italiana a Roma. A tutt’oggi ha collaborato anche con l’ORT Orchestra Regionale Toscana, l’Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, l’Orchestra Sinfonica dell’Emilia-Romagna “A. Toscanini”, l’Orchestra Filarmonica del Teatro Regio di Torino, l’EUR Spettacoli e l’Orchestra da Camera Lucchese.
Per quanto riguarda l’insegnamento, dal 2004 è docente di ruolo di Tromba e Laboratorio d’Improvvisazione al Conservatorio di Musica Vecchi Tonelli di Modena. Come docente internazionale ha tenuto clinics negli Stati Uniti alla California State University Northridge di Los Angeles, San Diego State University (California), Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma Christian University (Oklahoma), Rowan University di Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Riverside City College, Fullerton College (California), International Trumpet Seminar alla Grand Valley State University (Michigan), First Baptist Church of Decatur di Atlanta (Georgia), Canton High School, Region 7 School District di Winsted, Southington High School, Manchester High School e Hall High School di West Harford (Connecticut), e in ambito europeo in Lussemburgo, Germania (Amburgo, Schramberg e Offenburg), Spagna (Teror Festival de Trompet Isole Canarie, CIMVO Curs Internacional de Musica Vila de L’Olleria) e Svizzera (Zurigo, Mennedorf). Inoltre, ha tenuto master classes in Italia per molti anni alla Italian Brass Week, insieme alle prime parti della Chicago Symphony, Allen Vizzutti e Jens Lindemann, al Baceno Brass Festival e ai Corsi Internazionali di Bosa Antica. È stato l’unico trombettista italiano consultato per la stesura del libro didattico sull’impostazione trombettistica “Embouchure – The Pros Talk” (USA, 2002) di Clint Pops McLaughlin. Nel 2003 stato assistente al seminario tenuto da Maynard Ferguson al Vicenza Jazz Festival.
Dal 2000 al 2010 è stato anche direttore artistico del “Dean Benedetti Jazz Festival” di Torre del Lago Puccini (LU).

 

 

Andrea Tofanelli, trumpet player, was born in Viareggio (LU) on July 26, 1965. In 2010 the new album “Flamingo” was released produced by Jim Linahon’s LMP Studios (Clermont, California) for the ACM label (American Creative Music, USA) and the “Earth Games 2012” suite (Summit Records, USA) with Joe Alessi, dedicated to him by the composer Nicola Ferro. The album “More Than Just Friends” recorded as first trumpet and soloist with the Dani Felber Big Band won the prestigious “Swiss Jazz Award” in 2010, while the album “Portrait of Dani” (2015) containing Andrea’s solo performance on song “This is For My Friend Andrea Tofanelli” won Platinum in Switzerland.

Between pop, jazz, Latin music and soundtracks, Andrea has recorded more than 500 records, many of which have obtained Gold and Platinum records in Italy and abroad, collaborating with the most prestigious Italian and international artists.

In the field of classical music he won national competitions for the Italian Youth Orchestra of Fiesole (European and Italian Tour 1988) and for the Teatro Comunale del Giglio in Lucca, also arriving in the final in Rome in the selections for the ECYO (Orchestra European Youth). In 1989/90 he carried out his military service playing in the Italian Air Force Band in Rome. To date he has also collaborated with the ORT Orchestra Regionale Toscana, the Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Symphony Orchestra of Emilia-Romagna “A. Toscanini ”, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Teatro Regio di Torino, the EUR Spettacoli and the Lucchese Chamber Orchestra.

As far as teaching is concerned, since 2004 he has been full professor of Trumpet and Improvisation Laboratory at Conservatory Of Music “O.Vecchi-A.Tonelli” in Modena. In addition, he takes care of the Trumpet and Brass workshop at the Improvisation and Introduction to Jazz Course at the prestigious Fiesole School of Music. As an international lecturer he has held clinics in the United States at California State University Northridge in Los Angeles, San Diego State University (California), Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma Christian University (Oklahoma), Rowan University in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Riverside City College, Fullerton College (California), International Trumpet Seminar at Grand Valley State University (Michigan), First Baptist Church of Decatur in Atlanta (Georgia), Canton High School, Region 7 School District of Winsted, Southington High School, Manchester High School and Hall High School of West Harford (Connecticut), in Japan at the Japan Band Clinic, and in Europe in Norway (Norges Musikkhøgskole-Norwegian Academy of Music), Luxembourg (Musique Militaire Grand-Ducale Philarmonie), Germany (Musikhochschule di Lubeck, Hamburg, Schramberg and Offenburg), Spain (Teror Festival de Trompeta Canary Islands, CIMVO Curs Internacional de Musica Vila de L’Olleria), Poland (Academie Musi drops in Lodz and Poznań, Letnia Akademia-Summer Brass Academy in Opole) and Switzerland (Zurich, Mennedorf, Ermatingen). In addition, he has held master classes in Italy for many years at the Italian Brass Week, together with the first parts of the Chicago Symphony, Allen Vizzutti and Jens Lindemann, at the Baceno Brass Festival and at the Bosa Antica International Courses. He was the only Italian trumpeter consulted for the writing of the didactic book on the trumpet setting “Embouchure – The Pros Talk” (USA, 2002) by Clint Pops McLaughlin. In 2003 he was assistant to the seminar held by Maynard Ferguson at the Vicenza Jazz Festival.

From 2000 to 2010 he was also artistic director of the “Dean Benedetti Jazz Festival” in Torre del Lago Puccini (LU).

Since 2003 Andrea Tofanelli is an international YAMAHA artist and clinician.
